Following Harry review: Who picks up the torch?

Harry Belafonte’s legacy isn’t just with his actions, but with the people who take them on

Harry Belafonte is a monumental figure. Many know him from his incredible music, others from his film career, and yet his lasting legacy is far greater. His activism, both political and humanitarian, made incredible headway towards improving the lives of others. His work has had far reaching effects, touching the lives of millions, if not more.

Following Harry, the new documentary from Susanne Rostock, takes a look at the last twelve years of the figure’s life, from the death of Trayvon Martin through the Black Lives Matter movement. It explores his actions and his work, and yet the most interesting aspect isn’t necessarily about the man himself but about the ripples into the lives of others.

It asks the question: who will follow Harry Belafonte?

The film shows us how Belafonte energizes and uplifts all those around him, from celebrities to citizens, how they circle him, and how those circles grow. With some poignant scenes and moments from those 12 years, especially giving us flashbacks and PTSD at some key moments, it informs us that time continues to push forward, that the work is never really done.

That work is depicted almost as a serial, with that string of scenes and moments, and sometimes we’re wondering if it’s a structured documentary or a camera constantly recording; it doesn’t necessarily have grip us from a narrative standpoint as much as its content does. It’s good, it’s worth watching, understanding how this monument of a man has done so much to inspire others around him. In between the big themes is a lot of intimate looks at almost the procedural stuff that goes with the territory. Small meetings, preparation, looking over paperwork. It moves at a pace where we can take notes, like a class on preparing to better the world.

But a strong final arc, especially a punching final few scenes, celebrates and invigorates us to take his torch onward.

Because the answer to that question of who will follow Harry is us, all of us.

Following Harry is available on digital platforms now.
